Helen Oyeyemi's vulpine tale finds frustrated novelist St. John Fox entertaining his supernatural Muse in the form of an all too flesh-and-blood woman named Mary, whose attempts to instruct and enlighten her protégé engender marital discord with Daphne, Fox's mortal wife.
